This tutorial series is scheduled to take place on April 30 and May 7. Do not miss it!‘
This tutorial series will introduce fundamental concepts and mathematical tools to tackle the quantum physics of many-particle systems. The first tutorial will start by reviewing the concepts of identical particles, including Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics as well as the formalism of second quantization. We will then use the formalism to derive the prediction of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC)—a novel quantum phase of matter where particles behave collectively as a single coherent matter wave—for non-interacting bosonic particles at low temperatures.
In the second tutorial, we will cover how BEC behaves when there are interactions between the particles. In particular, we will use mean-field theory to derive the well-known Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), important for describing various BEC experiments in ultracold gases. The tutorial will conclude by outlining some open challenges in going beyond mean-field theory.
